In which culture media can phenol red be omitted?
Publication date:2026-10-29
Page views:
Phenol red is used in culture media as a pH indicator: it appears red at neutral pH, yellow under acidic conditions, and purple under alkaline conditions. Studies have shown that phenol red can mimic the effects of steroidal hormones, particularly estrogens. To avoid steroidal‑mediated responses, it should not be added when culturing cells, especially mammalian cells.
