Why is cell passage culture performed?
Publication date:2026-10-29
Page views:
When cultured cells reach a certain density, density‑dependent inhibition occurs, characterized by a gradual deceleration or even cessation of cell growth and division. Adherent cells will form a confluent monolayer within the culture flask (while suspension‑cultured cells will fill the entire volume of the medium), covering the bottom of the flask. If these cells are not promptly passaged—i.e., subcultured—they will progressively age and die. Transferring a portion of the cultured cells from one vessel to another at an appropriate ratio to expand the culture is referred to as subculture.
