Should double antibiotics (penicillin and streptomycin) be added to the culture medium?
Publication date:2026-10-29
Page views:
Dual antibiotics are not essential for cell growth. We do not routinely use antibiotics in our cell cultures, as continuous antibiotic exposure can promote the emergence of antibiotic‑resistant cell lines, leading to persistent low‑level contamination. Once antibiotics are removed from the culture medium, such low‑level contamination may eventually escalate into a full‑blown contamination event. Ultimately, whether or not to use dual antibiotics should be determined based on your laboratory’s specific conditions.
