What are the differences between fetal bovine serum and other bovine serums?
1. Serum is a complex mixture obtained by removing fibrin from plasma, providing various supportive and protective functions for cell culture and growth; its compositional profile varies considerably with the age of the donor animal.
2. Fetal bovine serum is obtained from fetuses delivered by cesarean section; newborn bovine serum is derived from calves within 24 hours of birth; and calf serum is sourced from calves aged 10 to 30 days. Because fetal calves have not yet been exposed to the external environment, fetal bovine serum contains minimal levels of cell‑harmful components such as antibodies and complement, making it superior in quality to other types of bovine serum.
