Why does cell culture medium appear yellowish or purplish?
The yellowing of the cell culture medium is due to excessive cell density, which leads to the accumulation of acidic metabolic waste products. The resulting increase in pH causes phenol red to change color, indicating inadequate cellular nutrition. The cell culture medium turns purple because CO2 gradually escapes from the medium, causing it to become increasingly alkaline and thus turn purple.
