Product Description
This product is a mixture of penicillin and streptomycin, hence it is referred to as the penicillin–streptomycin mixture, also known as “double‑antibiotic.” It is a commonly used antibiotic for preventing microbial contamination in in vitro cell culture. The combined use of penicillin and streptomycin effectively guards against most bacterial contaminants. Penicillin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, thereby efficiently suppressing Gram‑positive bacteria. Streptomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, blocking protein synthesis and thus inhibiting bacterial growth; it primarily targets Gram‑negative bacteria but also exhibits activity against Gram‑positive organisms.
This product contains penicillin at 10,000 U/mL and streptomycin at 10,000 µg/mL, and has been sterilized by filtration through a 0.22 µm membrane.

Q: Is it normal that the penicillin‑streptomycin solution is not colorless? For the undiluted double‑antibiotic solution, I noticed a yellow layer on top—is this a normal phenomenon?
A: The pink or yellow coloration of the streptomycin–streptothricin solution (double‑antibiotic) is a normal phenomenon. This variation in color is primarily due to residual natural pigments produced by the strain used in streptomycin manufacturing—Streptomyces griseus—and may range from colorless to pink or yellow depending on the batch of raw materials. Such color differences are an inherent feature of the production process and do not affect the antibiotic’s antibacterial potency or its performance in cell culture.
