Product Description
Doxycycline hyclate is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic that can penetrate cell membranes, bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupt tRNA–mRNA interactions, and ultimately inhibit protein synthesis. As a broad-spectrum antibiotic and bacteriostatic agent, it exhibits particularly potent activity against bacteria responsible for respiratory tract infections, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. In addition, it is effective in treating infections caused by Chlamydia, Rickettsia, and certain spirochetes, and it also possesses antiprotozoal and anthelmintic properties.
Doxycycline hydrochloride is also an inhibitor of several matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), including MMP‑8 (neutrophil collagenase; IC50 = 30 μM) and MMP‑1 (interstitial collagenase; IC50 = 300 μM). Studies have reported that, in the context of recurrent corneal erosion, it can significantly reduce both the expression levels and enzymatic activity of MMP‑9. In smooth muscle research, it has been shown to enhance and promote smooth muscle cell adhesion, modulate the reorganization of fibrillar collagen matrices, and facilitate cell migration. Additionally, it can suppress the inflammatory response associated with Lyme disease and interfere with the plasminogen system, thereby exerting a protective effect on microvessels.
Doxycycline hydrochloride is also commonly used in Tet‑on (rtTA‑dependent) and Tet‑off (tTA‑dependent) systems to regulate gene expression, and it is suitable for both in vivo and in vitro cell culture. This compound has a solubility of approximately 50 mg/mL in water; moderate heating can facilitate complete dissolution. According to the literature, it is also soluble in DMSO (~1 mg/mL) and methanol, but insoluble in chloroform and diethyl ether.
