Product Description
Hygromycin B is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It inhibits protein synthesis by disrupting 70S ribosomal translocation and inducing misreading of the mRNA template, thereby killing prokaryotic cells (such as bacteria), eukaryotic cells (such as yeast and fungi), and eukaryotic cells of higher mammals.
The hygromycin resistance gene (hyg or hph), derived from Escherichia coli, encodes hygromycin B phosphotransferase, which converts hygromycin B into an inactive phosphorylated form, thereby conferring detoxification. Based on this mechanism, hygromycin B serves as a highly effective selective marker for screening and maintaining prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells that have been successfully transfected with the hygromycin resistance gene. Furthermore, due to its distinct mode of action, it is often used in combination with G418 (Cat: AB11L234), Zeocin (Cat: AB11L251), and Blasticidin S (Cat: AB11L221) to select for double‑resistant cell lines. Hygromycin B can also function as an antiviral agent, as it selectively penetrates cells whose permeability is increased by viral infection and inhibits translation. Additionally, it may be incorporated into animal feed to exert anthelmintic effects.
