Product Description
Gentamicin sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that exhibits potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including certain β-lactam‑susceptible vancomycin‑resistant enterococci (VRE) and some “superbugs” resistant to glycopeptide antibiotics. Its bacteriostatic mechanism involves binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inducing codon misreading and blocking the translocation of peptidyl‑tRNA from the A site to the P site, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Gentamicin sulfate is widely used in laboratory settings: (1) in microbiological research, it is commonly employed in antimicrobial susceptibility testing to screen for susceptible bacteria; (2) in cell culture, it inhibits bacterial contamination at effective concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 50 µg/mL; (3) in molecular biology, it is frequently used for the selective screening of positive clones harboring gentamicin resistance genes, typically at a concentration of 15 µg/mL.
