Product Description
Gibberellin is a plant growth hormone that promotes the growth of stems and leaves, accelerates bolting and flowering, stimulates the germination of seeds, tubers, and root tubers, and enhances fruit development. It can also increase fruit set or induce seedless fruit formation. Yield increases have been observed in crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, rice, wheat, cotton, soybeans, peas, tobacco, and fruit trees. However, excessive application of gibberellin may result in yellow, slender, elongated shoots—characterized by chlorosis and etiolation—which can ultimately reduce yield. Gibberellin is also used in the production of malt from barley and exerts a stimulatory effect on insect development.
It is soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, and esters, as well as in a phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.3, but poorly soluble in ethers, chloroform, benzene, and water. It forms salts with potassium and sodium ions and is soluble in water. Gibberellin solids are relatively stable; when stored under dry, airtight conditions, they remain effective for extended periods. Aqueous solutions, however, are unstable: they retain activity upon short-term storage at low temperatures, but decompose more rapidly at elevated temperatures. The compound is stable under acidic or mildly acidic conditions, whereas it is unstable in alkaline environments.
