Product Description
Cyanine 5 has a wide range of applications: it can be used not only for labeling biomacromolecules but also as a derivatizing reagent for certain small molecules. Compared with other fluorescent reagents that label thiols, such as FITC and TRITC, it exhibits higher reaction selectivity.
Maleimide is commonly used for labeling thiol groups. Cyanine 5 maleimide is a near-infrared dye that, in addition to conjugating with the amino groups of peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides, is frequently employed in in vivo imaging of small animals. By avoiding the visible-light region, where many biomolecules exhibit strong absorption, cyanine 5 absorbs near-infrared light, which penetrates biological tissues more deeply, while its emitted fluorescence is less affected by background autofluorescence, enabling signal generation even in deep tissues. Particularly within the 700–900 nm range, water and hemoglobin exhibit minimal absorption, allowing near-infrared light to penetrate up to 15 cm into tissue. Moreover, these dyes offer biosafety advantages that are unattainable with UV‑excited dyes or isotopic labels. Cyanine 5 (Cy5) is the most widely used near-infrared fluorescent dye.
Cyanine 5 maleimide requires a cosolvent, but its lower hydrophobicity compared to Cyanine 7 makes it more widely applicable. Li Ji Bio offers Cyanine 5 maleimide in the form of triethylammonium salts, which are more soluble than the potassium‑salt form marketed by other companies. With identical optical properties and reactivity, this formulation provides superior solubility.
Cyanine 5 maleimide exhibits broad-spectrum chemical properties similar to those of Alexa Fluor 680 maleimide and DyLight 680 maleimide, making it a suitable alternative.
