    X-Gal is a chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase; under the catalysis of this enzyme, it yields a blue product. Leveraging this property, when pUC‑series vector DNA is transformed into lacZ‑deficient host cells or when M13 phage vectors are transfected, adding X‑Gal and IPTG to the culture medium allows for the convenient selection of recombinant clones based on whether colonies appear white, thanks to the α‑complementation phenomenon of β‑galactosidase.
