Product Description
Gram staining is a widely used differential staining technique in bacteriology. After the mordant iodine solution enters the bacterial cell, it binds with crystal violet. Gram-positive bacteria take up and retain large amounts of iodine–crystal violet complex, making them resistant to decolorization by alcohol. In contrast, Gram-negative bacteria absorb only small amounts of the dye complex, which is loosely bound and easily washed away by alcohol. For easier observation, a red counterstain, such as basic fuchsin, is applied after decolorization. The Gram-positive cells remain purple, while the Gram-negative cells are stained red.
