Product Description
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic isolated by David Gottlieb from Streptomyces venezuelae. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity at the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby blocking protein synthesis. At high concentrations, it can also suppress eukaryotic DNA synthesis, further impeding bacterial protein biosynthesis. Clinically, it is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative organisms, and is an effective agent for typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, and bacterial conjunctivitis. However, due to its potential to induce adverse hematopoietic effects, its clinical use is considerably restricted.
This product is prepared by dissolving chloramphenicol in ethanol; if necessary, it should be filtered through an organic membrane filter prior to use in cell culture. In molecular biology, it serves as a selection agent for chloramphenicol‑resistant genes, with an effective working concentration of 25–170 μg/mL.
