Product Description
Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces nodosus. Its mechanism of action involves binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, thereby altering membrane permeability and allowing intracellular potassium ions and amino acids to leak out. This disrupts normal fungal metabolism and ultimately leads to fungal cell death. Since bacterial and viral cell membranes do not contain ergosterol, amphotericin B has no inhibitory or lethal effect on these microorganisms. Moreover, human and animal cell membranes contain cholesterol, which exhibits a certain affinity for amphotericin B; consequently, the drug can exert some toxicity in humans. Clinically, amphotericin B is primarily used to treat severe and deep-seated fungal infections.
This product is prepared by dissolving amphotericin B in DMSO; for cell culture applications, it must be filtered through an organic‑compatible membrane filter.
