Product Description
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces erythreus, with CAS number 114-07-8 and a molecular weight of 733.93. It exhibits potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus species, Bacillus anthracis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, hemolytic streptococci, and Clostridium species. In addition, erythromycin exerts some inhibitory effects on certain Gram-negative bacteria. Its antibacterial action stems from its ability to bind to bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting peptide chain elongation. For strains resistant to penicillin, erythromycin generally remains effective. Erythromycin is commonly used to treat infections caused by penicillin‑resistant Staphylococcus aureus and in patients who are allergic to penicillin.
This product is prepared by dissolving erythromycin in ethanol; for use in cell culture, it should be filtered through an organic‑compatible membrane filter.
