    Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In cell culture, streptomycin can suppress bacterial contamination; in molecular biology, it is commonly used to select bacterial clones that have successfully taken up streptomycin‑resistant plasmids.
