Product Description
GelRed was originally developed by Biotium, a U.S. company. It is a uniquely designed fluorescent dye that binds to the minor groove of all double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) helices. Its fluorescence intensity correlates with the amount of dsDNA, and it exhibits spectral properties identical to those of ethidium bromide (EB), allowing it to be visualized using standard UV‑transilluminators used for EB staining. After staining, DNA bands emit red fluorescence under UV illumination. This novel dye offers several advantages: it cannot penetrate cell membranes, exhibits extremely strong binding to dsDNA, has low mutagenic potential, demonstrates high thermal stability, does not inhibit commonly used molecular biology enzymes, and boasts a broad range of applications—features that have earned it widespread market acceptance. This product is suitable for staining dsDNA, ssDNA, and RNA in agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
Product Advantages
• Safe and non-toxic; it uses anthocyanins (a hydrophobic macromolecule with a molecular weight of 1,400) as the raw material, which cannot penetrate cell membranes and is significantly larger than the EB molecule, whose molecular weight is 690.
• It offers stable performance and can be stored at room temperature for up to 99 months; when staining the gel, there is no need to wait for the agarose to cool—simply add the stain directly.
• It exhibits excellent light resistance and can be directly visualized using a visible-light gel imaging system.
